Tax Practitioners Board CPA Australia Xero Gold Partner
Most Brisbane small business owners we speak to have the same story: they've been with a local accountant for years, they get a response every few months, and they have no real idea where their business stands financially. AffordBooksTax is different. We work remotely with clients across Brisbane and South East Queensland, and you'll hear back from us the same day - not after the quarter's already gone.

AffordBooksTax is based in Vermont, Melbourne, and delivers everything virtually through Xero. Your location doesn't affect turnaround times or the quality of work - Brisbane and Melbourne are in the same time zone, and everything from reconciliations to BAS lodgement happens inside your Xero file. No paperwork drop-offs, no office visits, no delays waiting for a local bookkeeper to fit you in.

We are a registered tax agent and Xero Gold Partner. That means we can lodge your BAS directly with the ATO, act as your tax agent for extended deadlines, and handle your end-of-year tax return - all under one fixed monthly fee that is based on your revenue, not a flat rate that ignores the size of your business.

Brisbane's small business landscape has a specific profile that most accounting firms aren't built for. Construction and trades businesses in Ipswich, Redland Bay and the Northside have been growing fast - many have crossed the $75,000 GST threshold without registering, which creates ATO exposure. The NDIS sector across South East Queensland is one of the most complex for bookkeeping, with GST-free supply rules that trip up providers who aren't across the four conditions required to code income correctly. And hospitality businesses in West End, Fortitude Valley and South Bank run on tight margins with casual payroll that changes week to week.

These are not edge cases - they are the businesses we built AffordBooksTax for. If you pay subcontractors, you likely have a Taxable Payments Annual Report due by 28 August each year. If you operate under an NDIS plan, your GST coding needs to be right before the BAS goes in. If you have casual staff, your STP lodgements need to match every pay run. We handle all of it, and we set up your Xero in a way that makes these things automatic rather than stressful.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions - bookkeeper Brisbane

Can a Melbourne-based bookkeeper really handle my Brisbane business?
Yes, and this is how most modern bookkeeping works. Because everything runs through Xero and our client portal, your location and ours don't affect the quality or speed of the work. Brisbane and Melbourne are in the same time zone for most of the year, so calls and responses are never a cross-timezone issue. Bank feeds connect directly to Xero, we reconcile monthly, and you have a clear view of your finances anytime you log in. The majority of our clients have never needed to meet us in person.
How much does bookkeeping cost for a small business in Brisbane?
At AffordBooksTax, bookkeeping starts at $98 per month for businesses turning over up to $50,000 per year. At $51,000 to $100,000 revenue it is $147 per month, scaling to $490 per month for $301,000 to $500,000. These are fixed monthly amounts - no surprise invoices, no hourly overruns. All prices exclude GST. There are no setup fees and no lock-in contracts.
Is it worth getting a bookkeeper if I only turn over $80,000 a year?
At $80,000 turnover you are almost certainly registered for GST, which means a quarterly BAS obligation to the ATO. Getting that wrong costs more than a bookkeeper does. At our Tier 2 pricing that is $147 per month for bookkeeping and $170 per quarter for BAS. Most clients say the hours they save every month are worth more than the fee, before you even factor in the cost of a mistake on a BAS.
Can you help with TPAR for my Brisbane subcontractors?
Yes. The Taxable Payments Annual Report is a common obligation for Brisbane construction and trades businesses that pay subcontractors, and it is due to the ATO by 28 August each year. It reports the total payments made to each contractor during the financial year. We handle TPAR preparation and lodgement as part of our tax and compliance work. If you are not sure whether it applies to your business, book a free call and we will work through it with you.
How much does BAS lodgement cost in Queensland?
BAS is a federal obligation, so the rules and rates are identical across Australia - Queensland is no different to any other state. Our BAS lodgement starts at $99 per quarter for businesses up to $50,000 revenue, rising to $295 per quarter for $301,000 to $500,000. As your registered tax agent, you also get an extended lodgement deadline well beyond the standard 28 days, which takes the pressure off if things get busy at quarter end.
Do you work with Brisbane tradies and construction businesses?
Tradies and contractors are one of our core client groups. Brisbane's construction boom has pushed a lot of sole trader builders, electricians, plumbers and landscapers - particularly in Ipswich, Redland Bay and across the Northside - past the GST threshold or into TPAR territory without them realising. We set up Xero in a way that makes subcontractor tracking, vehicle expenses and tool deductions easy to manage, and we stay on top of the compliance obligations so you don't have to. See our tradies bookkeeping page for more detail.
